Reflections on a meeting...

I just got back from an interview with the assistant CE/director of public policy department. Big shots in this organization get personal secretaries and nice offices with 100% privacy. DUHHhhh privacy level goes up while climbing the corporate ladder.:P
It was quite nice of him to put aside some time to get to know me. He asked me about my background and was extremely interested in the public policy aspect of my major. Our discussion mainly consisted of my project. He gave me more perspectives that I could take into consideration , like the effects of propositions on environmental pressure groups and what if environmental pressure groups began to have political agendas. And certainly, the phosphate-based detergent issue is just the tip of the iceberg, there are multitude other issues involved in the whole Marina Barrage project and Public Policy, at best, cannot provide us with a 100% guaranteed effective and disadvantageless solution. I’m glad that the director was concerned that the scope of my project is too small. I agree with it lah but it’s only for 3 weeks and the workload is just right for this short project. I’m aware that I should make the project more broad based…I will try to incorporate my very elementary policy analysis skills into the whole thing hehe.
The organization seems concerned about the what-ifs should a tsunami strike Singapore. As unlikely as it is, it is better to be safe than sorry. I mean if a tsunami really hit Singapore, most of the island will be flooded lor and so can our drainage system cope with the inflow of water?
One thing I noticed is that I am far more conversational in Singapore than in USA…I think it is partially due to last semesters’ overdose of interactive group projects. And another thing is that I don’t need to grapple with the whole issue of feeling bad because I am cutting into another person’s conversation. Most Americans just keep on talking and go on and on whereas most Asians have pauses in their conversations, as though inviting the other party to say something. Aiyah this cultural thing very the marfan but what to do, gotta adapt to it!
Uh oh…I’m starting to get into the “crazy planner” mood liao. Time to hit the net and do some research.
