Happy April Fools
Just thinking about random events...
April Fools’ 1996 A week before that fateful day, my class form teacher and the form teacher next door told us that a rabbi was coming to visit us and that we were supposed to plan welcome him to the school. The rabbi was relevant in context because we were doing a literary analysis of Friedrich and were interested in Jews’ reactions to WWII. And so, the class started a planning committee for the welcome thing…there were people who became extremely garang…dunno what fold ketupat, make banners, organize plays. It was not until the day the rabbi was due to arrive that Bianca discovered that it was April Fools’ Day and we might be duped. She was tempted to ask our English teacher what the rabbi’s name was because if he name was loof lirpa (try spelling backwards) means it was sure to be a joke. Of course that discovery caused a mass pandemonium for P6G and 6H but we decided to go along with the welcome anyway. 15 min before the due arrival, both teachers passed out a 20-person-long banner and we posed behind it and were asked to wave. I admit that was sneaky because little did we know what was written on the banner “Happy April Fools’ Day 6G and 6H”. Then we were asked to look at the banner and some people started to cry because they had put in soooooo much effort into organizing the welcome gathering and it was equivalent to seeing their hard work go to waste. I, on the other hand (you know me ah, I was only concerned about my piano stuff) was rather apathetic…feel duped but you know, it was fun and it proved that the teachers cared enough to plan such a devious joke on us. I remember some of my classmates made such a big fuss that they locked themselves in the toilet and started crying. They were inconsolable for the next couple of days… that’s why today will always be remembered as a day of both laughter and tears. Another lesson learnt from this experience is that it’s the process that counts, not so much the results. I’m sure my class had enjoyed the whole planning/rehearsing/setting up process and it had immensely added to our class spirit. Pity it had to end so sadly.
