Then hor, over here I MISS SINGLISH!Can only speak that with the fellow Singaporeans. Heard that there's this UWC gal from Singapore who's at UVA who is learning Singlish but it's screwed up. She says "la lah" instead of " yah lah". The ang mohs cannot understand us you know. They're like "huh?"so I've to speak with this fake accent that sounds horrible. Their culture is also weird. They say hi to anyone they see face to face. Eg you are in the bathroom brushing your teeth and this gals walks in, you're supposed to greet her.Oh yah there's sth very funny that happened. Yaoquan(the RI top boy in our batch in Duke too) was visiting another dorm. We approached this corner dorm room where the door was wide open and he just kaypoh,walk in to find out whose dorm it was. The gals in the dorm were really nice, they were like "Hey there, come and look around.This is my room etc etc" I think in NUS hostel, you'll get a glare and get kicked out of the room. Oh yes, they're also very open with their underwear and private stuff. A girl that we didn't even know invited us into her room and her wardrobe was left open. A red bra was happily hanging right out in front and on the top shelf that was a whole box of tampax!Argh...I mean of course gals have these things but they leave them hanging around in the most obvious spots!!I have yet to get used to it!
Today's the first day of classes!We only have 2 classes a day usually if we schedule our classes everyday. Just took Econ 55D lecture and found out that it's EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE A LEVEL SYLLABUS...A bloody waste of my time but also it may be an ez way to get a good grade!!!!(lazy pig me)
Oh yes...my pre maj advisor is really really nice and absolutely suitable to advice me!He was an economist for 8 years before becoming a registrar (ie he plans our course schedules and gives us credit for our A levels).
Food at Duke Markeplace SUX!!!There's lotsa food but there's no variety so I carefully plan what to eat every day and don't pig out by trying the whole buffet spread."The soft drink dispensers have nothing in it but water!ARGH
My dorm is decorated already with photos.Yesterday (on sunday) I went shopping at Walmart with 3 other Singaporeans. The cab bill is ex US$40 to and fro but luckily we shared it amongst ourselves. Shopping in US is very spread out, not like Singapore where it's compact and you don't have to walk around alot. Here, each shop is enormous and rarely are shopping centres more than 2 storeys high. Also, the SCs are in ULU PLACES!!!A shopaholic like me will suffer man. Will learn to drive soon!
I miss Singapore!I'm coming back for winter break even tho plane tickets are real costly (like $2k). The interesting part is that my parents seem eager for me to come back. Mom has even learnt how to email! And last year she couldn't even switch on the computer!She's sent me about 5 emails already..must be worried about me.
For now, I'm having a great time! It's like I'm out of a cage and the only limit is the sky (and the American slang bleah!)
